May Sichuan Basin be a Super Petroliferous Basin?

  • Sichuan basin is entering a golden era for natural gas exploration and development. A series of giant gas fields, including Puguang, Moxi(Anyue) and Jiaoshiba gas fields, were successively discovered in nearly decade. Comparing with global typical Super petroliferous basins, the present paper discusses whether Sichuan basin is a Super petroliferous basin from geological structure, source rock, reservoir, capping layer, and infrastructure. The analysis shows that Sichuan basin is characterized by obvious tectonic-sedimentary differentiation, extremely stable basement, high quality of hydrocarbon source rocks, high hydrocarbon generation rate, multiple high-quality reservoirs and various reservoir lithology, multiple cap rocks with good seal conditions, good oil and gas infrastructure, and abundant natural gas resources and great exploration prospect. Therefore, Sichuan basin may be a super basin with rich gas resources.
