Finite Element Analysis of Tool Edge Roundness Based on ABAQUS

  • Based on carbide thread chaser, simulation of screw machining using the finite element software ABAQUS was carried out. The influence of the radius of cutting tool edge roundness on cutting force and cutting temperature was analyzed. The simulation results showed that the tool cutting temperature mainly concentrated at the nose of the cutting tool. When the radius of cutting tool edge roundness increases, the cutting force firstly increased and then decreased, nevertheless the cutting temperature goes down and then goes up. When the radius of cutting tool edge roundness is 0.02mm, the cutting temperature is at lowest level. Experimental results and the simulation results have good consistency. The simulation model provides a theoretical foundation for the design of cutting tool geometry.
