Research on Modeling of Volumetric Errors and Detection Method for CNC Machine Tools Using Ball Bar

Abstract
Traditional detection method for volumetric errors of CNC machine tools has many shortcomings, such as time-consuming, high cost and being complicated to operate. In order to improve it, the authors proposed a novel analysis and detection method of the volumetric errors of machine tools, in which a hemispherical helix ball bar test was used. The error testing points in different positions were predicted and compensated with a built regression model. The experiment on a vertical machining centre for verifying the modeling and detection method showed that about an 80% reduction in geometric error was attained.
