Research on Modeling of Volumetric Errors and Detection Method for CNC Machine Tools Using Ball Bar

  • Traditional detection method for volumetric errors of CNC machine tools has many shortcomings, such as time-consuming, high cost and being complicated to operate. In order to improve it, the authors proposed a novel analysis and detection method of the volumetric errors of machine tools, in which a hemispherical helix ball bar test was used. The error testing points in different positions were predicted and compensated with a built regression model. The experiment on a vertical machining centre for verifying the modeling and detection method showed that about an 80% reduction in geometric error was attained.
