Comparative Study and Analysis of Electrical Characteristics for Metal-oxide Surge Arresters Based on Various Structural Classifications

  • In the paper, an index system for electrical characteristics of metal-oxide surge arresters is systematically summarized, which contains rated voltage (Ur), continuous operating voltage (Uc), nominal discharge current (In), overvoltage protection and insulation coordination coefficient (Ks), which are described based on various structural functions. Also, taking 10 kV power distribution system as an example, the main parameters of metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps and metal-oxide surge arresters containing series gapped structures are measured and checked. Combined the results with actual engineering cases, aiming at the safety accidents (such as explosion and etc.) in the use of metal-oxide surge arresters, the paper analyzes the causes and puts forward reasonable suggestions to promote the correct use of metal-oxide surge arresters in MV power system, and further to improve its effective utilization of electrical equipment overvoltage protection.
