Evaluation of Initial Storage Capacity for Containment Area Considering Grain Sorting of Dredged Slurries

  • The grain sorting of dredged slurries with high water contents is easy to lead to inhomogeneous distribution of soil properties, which has a great effect on accurate assessment of the initial storage capacity for containment area. Based on the field investigation of N1 containment area in the Eastern Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, a method of initial storage capacity design for containment areas is proposed considering the grain sorting. The method draws on the experience of the engineer manual: confined disposal of dredged material (EM 1110-2-5027). The method of initial storage capacity design of national standard, i.e. design code for dredged and reclamation works (JTS 181-5-2012) was discussed. The results show that the precision of the method is 15% higher than national standard when initial water content of dredged slurry is more than 1 000%. When initial water content is high, grain sorting is significant, and the precision is higher than national standard. The method has good applicability and promotional value.
