Analysis of Over-voltages of Electric Locomotive Passing the Articulated Phase Insulator

Abstract
Over-voltages frequently happen when the electric locomotive passes the articulated phase insulator, which causes tripping of substations and serious influence on safe operations of the overhead contact system and traction substations. In this paper, the simulation model of electric locomotive passing the articulated phase insulator was established in MATLAB/Simulink IDE. The simulation analysis was made for several important reasons that lead to excessive overvoltage, which include the different phase angle of the contact network, the position of electrical phase separation device, and the contact of higher harmonic.The Fourier analysis of overvoltage waveforms generated on neutral line was made. It is confirmed that these factors are the main factors affecting the peak of neutral line voltage.
