Abstract:
As a typical multi-ethnic nation of immigrants, Australian society presents multicultural characteristics. With unique geographical environment and historical development, Australian names of the places are rich in cultural connotations and are the reflection of Australian diversified cultures. They are not only the symbol of this country, but also of great memorial significance, providing indispensable historical basis for the study of the history and culture of the country. This paper attempts to study the multicultural features of Australian society by analyzing the descriptive and evocative place names closely connected with the Aboriginal language and culture, place names revealing Australian colonization, and some names reflecting other immigrants' language and culture.
