Abstract:
According to the concept and definition of Gini coefficient, this paper analyzes three methods for calculating Gini coefficient, and deduces the formula for calculating Gini coefficient by the National Bureau of Statistics.Such analysis and deduction makes Gini coefficient move from conceptual world to real life, deepens peoples' understanding on it, and more importantly, helps to clarify some erroneous views on Gini coefficient.Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve were first proposed by Gini independently. The calculation of Gini coefficient does not need to be based on Lorenz curve.Gini coefficient is just a tool that can be used to measure the average distribution of one statistical indicator among another. When the coefficient is used to measure average degree of income distribution, it has nothing to do with equality of value judgment as well as income gap.
