The Exploration of the Reasons for Non-English Major College Students' Poor Reading Ability and the Ways to Help Improve Their Vocabulary——Based on the Analysis on the Correlation Between Reading Ability and Vocabulary

  • 摘要: 普通本科院校非英语专业学生普遍将词汇看作是影响其阅读理解能力的首要因素,本文所进行的相关实证研究也显示出词汇量与学生阅读理解能力高度正相关。词汇之所以成为影响学生阅读理解能力的最基本因素,是因为:词汇不仅影响着大脑的信息加工和信息提取活动,而且还影响到大脑短时记忆系统的有效运转及最终的阅读理解结果。因此,为提高大学生的英语阅读理解能力,大学英语教师应采取相应策略帮助学生从广度和深度方面扩大词汇量。

     

    Abstract: Many non-English major college students with poor reading ability take vocabulary as the primary reason. The experiments concerned also shows that the comprehension of a reading passage is highly related to the size of the reader's vocabulary. In fact, vocabulary not only can affect the reader's processing and retrieving of information from the brain but also can have an influence on the reader's effective operation of the short-term memory system, thus affecting his reading. To improve the student's reading ability, English teachers should take effective strategies to help students broaden and deepen their vocabulary.
