The Shadow Play in southern Anhui Province began between the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. It had its heyday after developing and spreading through absorbing various forms of folk arts, such as Nan Xiao Diao(literally the southern minor), Flower-Drum Song, painting, carving and Paper-cutting. Based on the traditional modeling idea of positive and ugly shape, the Shadow Play in southern Anhui Province fuses aesthetic ideals and folk art many other elements, gradually forming a unique southern style of the spectrum of the plastic arts after development for thousands of years. This kind of spectrum is not a personal original creation. It is the outcome of three generations' of learning, accumulating and recreating. It highlights the artistic beauty and realism, accumulating simple utilitarian aesthetic ideal, mapping out the development for thousands of years.
